X just revealed a game-changing information on the platform. As of October 17, 2023, X will implement a new subscription method known as “Not a bot”. This method suggests users will have to pay $1 a year to have complete access to the platform (only applicable for new users). According to information revealed on the "Not a bot" help center page, this is only going to be applicable in New Zealand and the Philippines.

Pricing

It’s going to be;

New Zealand: $1.43 NZD per year and

Philippines: ₱42.51 PHP per year

More about the "Not a bot"

Meaning if you’re a new user to the platform from New Zealand or Philippines, you’ll have to pay $1 a year to create and have access to your account enabling you to perform actions such as like posts, reply, bookmark posts, repost and quote other accounts. New users will still be able to create read only accounts for free

Why this feature was implimented

According to Elon Musk, X incorporated this new ideal as a way of fighting bots without blocking real users. X formally known as Twitter is filled with a lot of bots when comparing it to other social media platforms. Bots are common in social media spaces and X has been trying to figure out a way to stop the influx of bots on the platform and Elon believes this might greatly help the platform. This will also help solve spamming problem in the platform

Important requirements

The amount ($1) here isn’t the defining solution to the bot problem but it’s also about the credit card + phone number verification. These requirements will help curb the existence of bots on the platform. For instance 100 bots will require 100 different credit card numbers and 100 different phone numbers. The credit card verification is probably going to be the most effective. This won’t definitely stop all bots but X’s goal is to make it difficult and expensive to get a bot on the platform.

Closure

The reason New Zealand and Philippines was chosen is because it’s a Pilot. This means it’s just a small experimental test which will decide how this new feature will be implemented globally. If X successfully accomplishes this in the upcoming years, there’s going to be a huge possibility other social media platforms will jump on the bandwagon, that is if X actually succeeds.
