Sonic Frontiers is a 3D open world single player game developed by Sonic Team. It was released to the world on November 8 2022 and it’s honestly a banger just like most Sonic games. The game was a huge success selling over 2.9 million units as of December 31, 2022. It should be 3 - 4 million copies sold worldwide as of the writing of this article. The game is honestly very impressive and it looks visually stunning. I will talk about the Sights, Sounds and Speed updates in Sonic Frontier
This game is a 3D platformer and open world game were players get to play as Sonic in the Starfall Islands which has different environment types to collect the Chaos Emeralds and how . As Sonic, you can run superfast which is obvious at this point in time, you can roll, double jump, dash/ drop dash, sidestep, collect rings, run on walls and finally get an energy boost which makes Sonic get unique skills. I won’t talk about the story of the game so I don’t spoil others. The Starfall Islands is honestly amazing. There are thick forests, Mountainous areas, deserts, beautiful wastelands, ancient ruins, flowery fields and others. There are also boosters which give players super special skills, we have collectables. The gameplay is amazing and the game itself is visually stunning. There are also puzzles with difficulty depending on the person playing
The game comes with 2 different game styles. These styles are Action Mode which is the default mode and High Speed style. Both styles are amazing and greatly vary depending on how you want your play style to be. With the action style, the gameplay speed ranging from sonic to the foes is toned down and so much more accurate. Because the gameplay speed is toned down, everything that goes on is much more visible. This style is good for people who suffer from motion sickness and who have a console requirement limit. Action style gives me huge Sonic Adventure vibes.
In high speed style, everything is fast ranging from Sonic to the foes. Some might say its superfast. It’s so fast sometimes I feel like everything’s happening at once. The environment is honestly much more visible in action style which might help especially when dealing with platformers and puzzle challenges. Regardless, both styles can still be customized in game settings.
Sonic Frontier released its 2023 content roadmap revealing three update patches this year. As of March 2023, Update 1 is finally available with the launch of patch 1.20 today. Sonic Frontier Update 1 is known as “Sights, Sounds and Speed” which will be examined below.
First there’s Jukebox Mode. Players can play their favorite music track anywhere in open zones with the jukebox mode. This honestly makes gameplay a whole lot better because tracks meant for specific locations can be played in another depending on the player’s preferences. You need to get music notes in order to use Jukebox mode. Music notes are pieces scattered across the map and it’s not hard to find them because if you check your map, you’ll actually see where the music notes are located which can be collected to get jukebox. These music notes basically have the music icon making it very noticeable. On ground, they look like disks.
Secondly, the update includes a Photo Mode. The Photo mode allows users to be able to take in-game pictures of their favorite moments during gameplay. There are also filters put in place when taking the pictures with several ways to alter picture angle depending on your preferences. You can zoom, hide or show grid, hide or show UI, tilt the camera, rotate the camera and also change camera speed To use Photo mode, you pause the game and go to photo mode were you’ll be able to see all the camera features
There’s a new Cyber Space Challenge Mode making players get super speed for cyberspace levels It might actually seem like nothing but when combined which extreme mode it can be a huge flex. You can challenge your own clock. Cyber Space Challenge automatically comes with the update. It’s found in the game’s home screen be. To unlock power boost, you need to get an S-rank on every map in the cyber space Mode. The maps include Kronos Islannd, Ares Island, Chaos Island, Ouranos Island.
Finally, there’s a battle rush mode were players get to play against various bosses they’ve played against in the past. Yes there are some little foes before the bosses but its not a lot of them making players jump from boss to boss and relieving some of their worst nightmares (it was Squid for me). You basically have to go through all the enemies and waves on all four Islands Battle Rush automatically comes with the update and easily found in the game’s home screen. You have to do Battle Rush mode and S-rank to unlock the new extreme difficulty. With extreme difficulty, you basically get one shot by any enemy and players won’t be able to upgrade sonic’s attacks.
The Sight, Sound and Speed update is actually very impressive despite this being the first Sonic Frontier update. Battle Rush is honestly very hard compared to cyber space challenge. Overall, the update is super good and engaging to players. Apart from these new game modes, there’s also SpringTime Kace Appearance
