I will be talking about Beat and Motion Chapter 7. Let me give you a brief explanation of what’s happened in the story so far. This manga isn’t so popular but I decided to write about it because I love it. If you want to read the manga, you can click here.
So the story follows a boy who wants recognition for his work called Tatsuhiko. Tatsuhiko wanted to become an animator when he was younger, he was passionate about it. He’d draw and show his parents and they loved it. There was a time where he drew someone, his classmates took the art and the person he was trying to draw found it very creepy so he stopped.
Overtime, he’d hear about a lot of people being recognized for doing great things. He was a fan of a girl called Nico. She was a musician and her songs were viral. He’d see animations from others who are his age. He also wanted recognition. He was part of a band called Chic with his friends thinking they will become great. The band wasn’t doing well as people weren’t interested. What broke the band was going to a music festival and listening to others who he believed to be better than him.
He worked hard and created an animation which gained the traction of his crush. Nico loved his work and wanted to work together. They met before in the past but he couldn’t recognize her. She was also drunk. Meeting again and becoming close, they became close friends. They promised to grow and become famous together. Nico got an offer from a huge record label. She honestly didn’t want to accept it because she was working with Tatsuhiko but he told her to accept it. Tatsuhiko knows this record label won’t need him. He promises Nico to grow as an animator so he can work with her in future.
He decides to join an animation competition with a 500,000 prize money and recognition. He later finds out the people who created the viral animation he loved are in his school. They are known as Nabari and Akame so he decides to talk to them. He finds out they are also part of this competition but Nabari has anger issues.
This chapter begins were last chapter ended off which was a conversation between Tatsuhiko, Akame and Nabari. Tatsuhiko apologizes because he thinks he brought bad memories when he spoke to them. He goes on saying he’s never used animation for selfish reasons but Nabari keeps on insisting. Nabari for some reason is upset for no good reason.
There are no winning trends but Nabari angrily tells Tatsuhiko. The festival takes a survey about the films before the final round of judging. He says they don’t make the results public but the surveys could factor into the final judging but he is saying all this out of anger making it very inaccurate. He’s pissed for no good reason telling Tatsuhiko to make a story any idiot would follow that’s filled with clichés. He also goes on saying Tatsuhiko should sell his soul to become a crooked star.
Tatsuhiko is confused as to why Nabari is mad but as we all know, he isn’t mad, he’s pissed. Akame tells Tatsuhiko they don’t know the types of films that win so Nabari was just ranting because he’s upset. According to Akame, one part of the judging criteria resonates with the audience.
Akame and Nabari decide to leave. That’s when Tatsuhiko reveals he just wants his work to be recognized and that’s all he wants. He doesn’t want anything more. Ever since he was little, he’d want people to give credit to his work because he feels he’s the only one who cares about his work. This makes him feel lonely and he’d wonder why he was born weak. Tatsuhiko after revealing his heart to them asks Nabari if he put his work out there for people to actually see it
Tatsuhiko apologizes to Nabari for making him angry. He was excited today because he’s seen it before in the past so he thought his work could someone make someone feel good similar to how Nabari’s work affected him in the past. He believes a person’s creation is a tool for communication that’s why he won’t give up wanting others to see his work.
Nabari feeling touched doesn’t know whether to ask for forgiveness. Nabari believes catering to trends and audience will make his work bland so he believes Tatsuhiko should just believe in his work and create it the way he wants even if it comes off a little bad.
Nabari decides to leave go home even though his grades are bad. Akame reveals Nabari was a big fan of Tatsuhiko band. Nabari loved the band’s progressive style, the band was different. They were in the middle of negotiations when they used to go to the bands concert. The company wanted their animation to follow specific popular trends. They were actually taken because the company believed Indie animators are cheaper and believe the animation trend would die down so they both looked up to the band. Akame reveals the band was so passionate and Nabari was just trying to say there’s a big difference between making something and getting recognized for it and making something for the sole purpose of recognition but he just didn’t know how to express it.
