The movie is based on Amorth's memoir. A memoir is basically like a biography or autobiography of oneself. Meaning in this case, the story is centered around Amorth's life. He is also one of the founders of the International Association of Exorcists. William Friedkin who is also the director of the Exorcist made a documentary about Father Gabriele Amorth who unfortunately passed away at age 91 on 16 September 2016 because of health complications. Screen Gem got the rights to tell the story of the exorcist's life was gotten from Michael Patrick Kaczmarek and Loyola productions which included the rights to Amorth's two best-selling memoirs "An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories".
