I will be talking about Marvel’s wasp Issue 1. This gave more insight into the personality and character trait of Janet Van Dyne otherwise known as Wasp. More insight is also revealed about her father, her life and loved one’s including her stepdaughter is good. I will do a recap of what happens in the issue. Not every single detail will be given out though.

Vernon Van Dyne's Passing

So this issue begins with a flashback. It’s about Wasp’s father Vernon Van Dyne. He was observing an experiment when something came out of it. This monster asked Vernon to look at it. His daughters name Janet; Janet Van dyne. Janet came into his room finding him dead. He died because he starred at the Alien. She came in along with Ant-Man (Avenger’s Ant-Man). She loved her dad but didn’t show him she loved him so she’s in regret because she won’t have a chance anymore. It was at this moment she became a superhero.

Janet And Her Close Friend Edwin

Presently, Janet is in a VIP bar and she’s having a conversation with a bar tender. He’s called Edwin and he’s Janet’s close friend for years. Edwin thinks this friendship is the greatest privilege of his declining years. This VIP bar is upstairs from the main bar and the entire bar is for costumed heroes. This VIP bar is a place to talk shop, Iron out misunderstandings and how to repeal new Anti-hero laws. Janet tells Edwin she feels appreciated and thinks her dad would want for this this place and Edwin confirms Janet’s insight. Its revealed by the top of the building had a very dark past but Edwin says it’s now Avenger’s HQ.

Janet's Daughter - Nadia

Janet decides to leave because she doesn’t want to miss her daughter’s (stepdaughter) experiment. Her daughter is called Nadia. Her costume was already on her so she changes and flies heading to Nadia. When she’s out of town, she’s usually called Jan. Jan doesn’t want to interferences so she calls up Mayor’s office seeking permission to ignore any villain despite being four foot in height and flying. Another reason for this is because costume vigilantes are no longer welcome to operate in New York City because of all the damage that’s happened over the years. Janet confirms the Mayor Cage is working on the problem so the citizens feel safe around super heroes.

Nadia's Organization

On Janet’s arrival, it’s revealed Nadia runs G.I.R.L which stands for The Genius in Action Research Labs. Nadia originally created it to address the Gender Imbalance in the “World’s Smartest People” list by finding the next generation of female super scientists but now it’s a global research network for women in S.T.E.M. Janet is so proud of her. Janet asks Nadia about what she’s been up to.

Nadia's Family

Nadia has been working on a portable Cathexis Ray for Dr. McGowan who’s based in Texas. Nadia has been distracted though because she’s been thinking of her biological mother Maria Trovaya and she makes Janet aware of that. Nadia goes on saying she knows her father who was the famous avenging Ant-Man very well but she doesn’t know a lot about her mother. According to Nadia “The Red Room Killed Maria, the day she gave birth”.

Nadia tells Janet she looked into the Avengers files and broke into some government databases such as the F.B.I and C.I.A and she wasn’t caught. According to Nadia, she could find only one of Maria’s relative which is Maria’s father and her grandfather Janos Trovaya. Janos was also killed the same day her mother passed which is very weird. It was revealed he died in a lab explosion. Nadia thinks it was all planned as its impossible the Defector died and his daughter is killed on the same day and believes her family was never avenged.

Janet Avenges Her Dad

Janet feels like she hears the quiet anger in Nadia’s voice. Janet is so proud of Nadia it hurts her father isn’t here to share that pride because her father Vernon Van Dyne was murdered by a monster from another world who wanted to conquer earth. Janet believes in the past, she could’ve watched from the sidelines and leave Hank to it but she couldn’t because Ant-Man needed a partner. Janet would avenge her father. The creature was loose in the city and anyone who looked at it died but the ants had noticed something. To defeat this creature, Ant-Man along with the wasp had to Neutralize its Formic Acid. That’s because Formic Acid was Integral to the creatures physical being. They rigged some Alkali shells and prayed without looking at it. According to Janet, they both felt the creature scream in their heads trying to make both of them look at it the way her father looked at it. When the creature finally vanished into mist, Janet felt as though her father’s ghost went with it to whatever rest was waiting. It was at that moment Janet broke down and cried.

The lab is Attacked

Janet recalling her past promises justice to her daughter Nadia because she understands what Nadia is going through.

Janet and Nadia are interrupted by a foe from Janet’s past that had an unhealthy obsession for her. He would always stalk Janet in the past claiming he was in love with her. They both shrunk down fighting him. Nadia reveals his suit is made up of Titanium underneath and his blades cut like soft cheese. Janet tries buying time for Nadia telling him how she chocked him in the past with a lengthy pipe and beat him without shrinking. Evading his attack as she’s tiny, she also threatens to give him a brain Aneurysm by simply entering through his ear canal. He’s scared calling her a hero but she’s pissed. Nadia zaps him as he tries attacking her and Janet also zaps the back of his leg putting him down.

Impending Doom

Janet knows someone sent him so she asks him. He takes off his mask and there’s a message written on his forehead saying ”Find Me”. According to Janet’s stalker, the old Man left a message.

By the end of this, we see the monster that killed Janet’s father along with Janos Trovaya. It’s unknown if it’s the same one Ant-Man and the wasp beat but it looks the same. As for Jonas, Nadia thinks he’s dead so it’s unknown if he’s the mastermind or he’s just a puppet.

Closure

I absolutely loved this issue. Reading it, I could feel the emotion and love between Janet and Nadia. This issue greatly brings out family aspects. Janet was in love with her father and avenged him but she will have to face her worst nightmare once more.
