Super Mario Bros. movie sequel announced, its directors and expected release date

The Super Mario Bros. movie is one of the most popular and bestselling animated films of all time. This movie was so successful Nintendo announced a live action Zelda movie. It basically set a norm for video game adaptations under the Nintendo IP. After its completing, it was uncertain if there will be a sequel to this popular animated movie but all that has changed.


Super Mario Bros. Sequel


Recently, it’s been announced a sequel to the “Super Mario Bros.” film is currently in the works. This was announced by Nintendo game director, Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri during a Mario Day Video which is annually celebrated during this time frame(March 10). Directors and current Development phase


Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will return to direct this film. They both co-directed the first super Mario movie. Illumination’s Meledandri said that they and their team of animators “are already busy at work storyboarding scenes and developing set designs for new environments”. Based on further information revealed, animation hasn’t begun yet. This is because illumination’s Meledandri said “We start animation soon, and rest assured we’ll be obsessing over every detail to get it just right”.

To add to what was said above, Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about his plans and how this time they are thinking about broadening Mario’s world further making the story more bright and fun. He didn’t specify what he was talking about. He might mean more world building or focusing on other characters but it’s hard to predict as of the moment.


Official Release date


Based on the information revealed this upcoming sequel is scheduled to release on April 3rd, 2026 which is just two years away. The future is very uncertain so it might be changed later on in the future. The release date given is like an estimate considering animation hasn’t begun yet.


Closure


I’m not surprised by this decision to make a sequel to this movie. As I said before, The Super Mario Bros film made a lot of money at the global box office so this makes perfect sense. The Super Mario Bros movie made a total of 1.36 billion USD (United States Dollars).
