Why Anime Streaming Sites Like AnimeKai Shutdown

AnimeKai is an unofficial platform that became popular among anime fans because it had a clean interface, a large anime library and fast uploads. Recent reports however suggest that the platform will be shutting down following a major infrastructure problem that’s connected to a fire at the NorthC data center facility in Almere, Netherlands. According to information circulating across several anime and news related communities, the platforms hosting system was severely affected after the fire disrupted power and technical infrastructure at the facility. AnimeKai’s situation highlights a larger issue affecting lots of unofficial anime streaming websites because many of them operate under unstable technical, legal and financial condition. This article is going to talk about whether Animekai will be shutting down and why other Anime streaming sites like AnimeKai shut down.

What Happened to AnimeKai?

There are lots of discussion and reports that suggest that Animekai is shutting down or reducing its overall operation. This is because of infrastructure disruptions that connected or linked to the NorthC data center fire in Almere, Netherlands. According to posts circulating within the anime community, the platform developer stated “sorry, our data center has been burned. We’re no longer able to provide the file hosting service”.

The fire at the NorthC facility also affected technical infrastructure, power systems, and connectivity which caused outages in lots of services in the Netherlands. AnimeKai relied on external hosting and file delivery systems so these disruptions most likely affected the platforms ability to continue operating normally. Most anime fans believe AnimeKai is going to die sooner following the incident in Netherlands.

Why Anime Streaming Sites Like AnimeKai Shutdown

Even though AnimeKai’s shutdown announcement is connected to an infrastructure failure caused by the NorthC data center fire, lots of other unofficial anime streaming websites usually disappear because they operate under pressure be it technical, legal or financial.

The first reason lots of unofficial anime sites shutdown is because of Copyright issues. Lots of Unofficial streaming sites distribute anime without official licenses and this is very problematic. Because of this, Copyright holders and anti-piracy organization regularly target these platforms through domain suspensions, takedown requests and some even file legal or court cases against the owners of these unofficial streaming sites.

The second reason for shutdowns is Server and Hosting Infrastructure Problem. Streaming anime requires massive infrastructure that includes video hosting systems, bandwidth, storage, and delivery servers. If these infrastructures are damaged, then the unofficial streaming service fails. Animekai is honestly the perfect example for this. AnimeKai depends on external hosting infrastructure which was connected to NorthC data centers and the fire affected this infrastructure. When the fire disrupted technical operations and connectivity, AnimeKai’s file hosting capabilities was affected because of this.

Another reason why unofficial streaming sites shut down is because of its operational costs. This means it’s very expensive to maintain servers, moderate the website, manage the sites bandwidth, manage the site (domain), and provide protection to visitors. This is especially true when traffic grows. Everything becomes expensive.

Why Anime Streaming Sites Keep Returning Under New Domains

One of the most confusing aspects of anime streaming shutdown is when the site reappears with a brand new domain or mirror version after legal or technical disruptions. It’s like the site didn’t disappear permanently. There are lots of examples for this for instance Hianime and Kissanime. The reason for this is because unofficial streaming platforms usually rely external hosting and they have a very easy or flexible domain setup. This means they can easily move domains, launch mirror sites, switch hosting providers or just rebuild everything under a new brand itself. This option isn’t available for official websites for instance Crunchyroll can’t easily change its domain or people might think its fake. In the case of unofficial websites, changing domains or creating extra backups is like a way of protection so the site isn’t taken down.

What Viewers Should Do Next

When a platform such as AnimeKai disappears or becomes unstable, it’s good that you don’t go for other unofficial or unsafe websites. First save your anime watchlist which is your progress. There are platforms like MyAnimeList for this. This is to make sure you don’t forget. When unofficial sites like AnimeKai go down, unofficial copies of this site is going to appear and this is what is called a “Mirror Site”. The goal of these sites will be to use get traffic and distribute malware. It’s also going to contain a lot of ads so you shouldn’t put any personal information on any of these mirror sites.

You should use legal platforms because these are the safest and most reliable options. There are lots of platform you can choose from but the most popular, stable and recommended streaming services include Crunchyroll, Netflix and HIDIVE. Honestly, there are so many platforms that show anime today so it’s really hard to even pick. Most anime fans tend to avoid safe platforms because its costs money. Location also has a part to play in all this.

The Bigger Problem Behind Anime Streaming Shutdowns

Lots of people use unofficial streaming websites and even though these sites shut down over time, people don’t stop. They just go for another unofficial website. This means the issue is the industry itself and not just individual websites. Many users face regional restrictions, expensive subscriptions, missing or even delayed anime releases when it comes to using Official services. Because of these issues, the demand for unofficial services just don’t go away.

Closure

The case of AnimeKai highlights how unstable an unofficial streaming platform can be. AnimeKai hasn’t shut down yet so you should still be able to access it for now but its future is uncertain. Even if this site shuts down, alternatives or mirror versions will just appear. It’s like an endless cycle. If you have extra funds and come from a Country that isn’t regionally restricted, try to use an official streaming service.
