Crunchyroll and Funimation are both popular streaming services for animated movies and series. Crunchyroll in particular has a vast library of past and ongoing anime’s. Anime’s are extremely popular and in order to support its creators, one way is to view these shows via a subscription service. There are indeed other ways to do this but I emphasized on this because this article is related to two of such subscription services (Crunchyroll and Funimation).
There are lots of anime fans who avoid paying subscription services (Crunchyroll, Hulu, Funimation and much more) to follow their favorite anime series because some might find torrenting easier. There are several factors with price being one of them. There is an unfortunate news for Crunchyroll subscribers. Some few days back (February 8, 2024), Crunchyroll announced Funimation will be ending its service. It also announced there is going to be a price hike. Crunchyroll sent an email informing its users about this upcoming price hike. I’m going to talk about the reason for this price hike and of course the details revealed in the email sent.
The reason for this is because of Crunchyroll’s deal with Funimation. Crunchyroll is merging with Funimation which is another popular anime streaming service. Funimation unfortunately is expected to end its service on April 2, 2024 but all of its content will be available in Crunchyroll. Aside from this, user credentials (such as logins) previously used in Funimation will be accessible in Crunchyroll so past Funimation subscribers can now migrate to Crunchyroll keeping their watch history and queue. If users also have accounts on bath streaming services, you’ll be given an option to merge both credentials. According to Funimation, the “transfer may vary depending on your specific payment platform, subscription type and region”. It was also revealed in a support page Crunchyroll does not support Funimation digital copies (DVD or Blu-ray) which means that access to previously available digital copies will no longer be supported.
Because of this, Crunchyroll has decided to increase its yearly subscription from $54.95 per year to $99.99 per year and this change will go into effect as of January 28, 2025.
The Service Update released by Crunchyroll said:
“Thank you for being a loyal Funimation customer; the Funimation service is ending on April 2, 2024.
You can still access the content you love on Crunchyroll which houses one of the largest anime libraries, subs, dubs, catalog and simulcast – as well as Games and The Crunchyroll store.
You don’t have to leave your Funimation Watch History and Funimation queue behind, you can migrate them to Crunchyroll. Please log into Crunchyroll using your Funimation credentials. If you already have a Crunchyroll account, your accounts will be merged and you will be prompted to migrate your user information at login
As part of our transition to Crunchyroll, the price of your new Crunchyroll plan will increase from USD $54.95/year to USD $99.99/year beginning January 28, 2025. Future billing will be provided by Crunchyroll. Changes will be reflected in your next billing cycle starting on January 28, 2025 and charged to your current payment method on file. If you want to make any changes to your subscription prior to the transition, please visit your account page or your third party access platform, or you may cancel at any time prior to your next billing date.”
Crunchyroll as of the moment might have dedicated following but this move will either make or break the service. There is no doubt many will drop the service and just view anime through other alternatives. As of the moment, there’s no information if refunds will be available for those who want to drop Funimation.
