Are you wondering whether you can play Marvel Rivals on your PlayStation 4? Good news for you, the game was officially announced for PS4 on September 12, 2025, coinciding with Season’s 4”Heart of Dragon” update. In the past, the popular hero shooter game was only available on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC but millions of PS4 owners can now join the Marvel Multiverse too. In this article, you will learn the full details of Marvel Rivals on the PS4 with information on release date, performance specs, how it runs on the PS4 and what to expect.
This section is for readers who aren’t aware of what Marvel Rivals is. Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play, 6v6 third-person shooter game developed by NetEase in partnership with Marvel Games. The game is team-based meaning players pick iconic Marvel heroes and villains, form teams and battle across map locations inspired or drawn from the Marvel Multiverse. It’s a really interesting game and it’s loved by a lot of Marvel and non-Marvel fans. The game launched on December 6, 2024 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with the PS4 version of Marvel Rivals arriving on September 12, 2025. Some Key features that make this game so exciting is character synergies, destructible environments and cross platform play. This makes the game unique and stands out compared to other Third-person shooter games. Different Marvel characters possess different ability sets making the game dynamic.
Marvel Rivals first launched on December 5-6, 2024 on Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. During that time period, the game did not support PlayStation 4 or Xbox One which let too many articles concluding it was “next gen only”. The initial rollout of the game brought full crossplay support across PS5, PC, and Xbox Series for casual modes but ranked competition was left out. The older consoles were also left out during this time period. Lots of PlayStation 4 players were wondering if they would eventually get their hands on Marvel Rivals and fortunately for them, that’s what eventually happened.
NetEase officially announced that Marvel Rivals would arrive on PlayStation 4 on September 12, 2025, as part of the games Season 4’s “Heart of Dragon” update. The announcement was posted on Marvel Rival’s official site and social media channels on September 5 with a scheduled download window following maintenance at 09:00 UTC on September 12. The PS4 release includes the full game experience meaning the same hero roster, seasonal content and modes introduced on other platforms. Performance however is lower than the ps5’s but that is understandable. NetEase and press outlets also confirmed that the PS4 listing on the PlayStation Store will support localized languages and region during rollout.
The launch coincided with Marvel Rivals Season 4 “Heart of Dragon” so the PS4 patch also carried the season’s hero additions and balance changes. It was also revealed that the PS4 version of Marvel Rivals will support Crossplay letting PS4 users queue with PS5, PC and Xbox Series players. A lot of PlayStation 4 users were happy because of this information.
The PS4 version of Marvel Rivals was optimized for PlayStation console hardware. On the base PS4 model, Marvel Rivals runs at 1080p resolution and is capped at 30 FPS (frames per second). On the PS4 Pro console, Marvel Rivals can hit 1440p resolution with 60 FPS giving it a closer feel to the current gen performance of the new gen console. In terms of Storage, you’ll need around 40 GB free space for installation on the base PS4.
Although the game is 30fps, it might feel behind a little during gameplay. 30 FPS on the base PS4 is serviceable or it’s like a formality. When a game is usually 30fps, this means it runs a little lesser that than especially during intense action scenes. The PS5 Pro’s 60pfs is much better in this case because you still get a good experience. What this basically means is that Marvel Rivals gameplay experience on the base PS4 is solid but if you’re after maximum responsiveness and a competitive edge then the PS4 Pro is the better option. If you want to experience the true gameplay experience of Marvel Rivals, you can get the game on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
1. The first step is to free up 40 to 70 GB storage. You can check your model because Official notes list say 70 GB for some build but it’s usually 40 GB. Also try to update your PS4 system.
2. From the PS4 home screen, open PlayStation Store, click on Search, and type Marvel Rivals. Choose the official listing and press Download/ Add to Library.
3. After clicking download, let the game install. If a game update appears, install the update first before launching the game.
4. Open the game and sign in with your PSN. You might be prompted to bind your Marvel Account. To bind your Marvel Account on PlayStation 4, go to Settings -> Other -> Account -> Account Binding. You need to bind your Marvel account to enable cross progression in Marvel Rivals so it’s important.
5. When you’re playing the game, you can adjust settings or game options. This will let you control crossplay, graphics, performance, controller sensitivity and much more. You can enjoy Marvel Rivals on PS4 once you follow these steps.
Marvel Rivals PS4 release is really good because PlayStation 4 still has a large install base. The PS4 has sold over 117 million units globally since its original release. This means millions of gamers are still on the PS4 and they play new multiplayer titles. From a business sense, it would be foolish if Marvel Rivals was excluded from the PS4. Marvel Rivals is now supported on the PS4 meaning the game’s matchmaking pool has increased, queue times has significantly improved and there’s a broader community participation for both casual and competitive players. There are lots of gamers who haven’t upgraded to newer consoles yet so releasing Marvel Rivals on PS4 maximizes accessibility and it makes to game more accessible. In short, the release of Marvel Rivals on PS4 has added the game’s value because it’s much more accessible and competitive.
After the release of Marvel Rivals on the PS4, lots of fans are wondering if the game will make its way to Xbox One considering its already in Xbox Series X/S. No official release has been announced. The current platforms Marvel Rivals works on include PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Marvel Rivals might come to Xbox One in the future but there’s no announcement.
Marvel Rivals PS4 release matters because it keeps the game accessible to millions of current PlayStation users. While performance should vary, the expected Marvel Rivals PS4 specs should allow a smooth multiplayer gameplay, even on the base console. Players can expect stable matches, crossplay supported matchmaking, and an active community engagement. Overall, and Marvel Rivals PS4 performance is still good and solid without needing a new gen upgrade.
