New York Times (NYT) Connections is a daily word association puzzle from the New York Times that quickly exploded in popularity after its 2023 launch. The game is loved by so many because players around the world treat it like a quick mental workout and a social habit. Players can complete this puzzle and share their results on Social Media for recognition. New York Times Connections Game now attracts millions of daily players and it’s also become one of the fastest growing word puzzle games on the web. This article will explain What New York Times Connections is including its popularity, subscription notes, and even how to play.
NYT Connections is a daily word puzzle game where you’re given 16 words and you must organize them into four groups of four. Each group of words is connected by a hidden theme such as types of fruit, things that fly, batman or words that sound similar or relate to each other. You keep trying combinations until you find all four groups but you only have a limited number of mistakes. The game is available on the New York Times Game Website and app. It has become popular because it’s simple and fun to play. It’s like a hobby to some people who want to test their knowledge.
New York Times Games saw 11.1 billion total puzzle plays across all its games in 2024. In that 11.1 billion, Connections alone logged 3.3 billion plays making it the second most played game on the New York Times Games roster behind Wordle. The New York Times Platform now claims an active player base of over 10 million daily users across web and app versions and this suggests Connections draws millions of daily players worldwide.
1. The first step is to open the NYT Games Site or the NYT Games app and select Connections. I wrote an article on how to access NYT Connections so you can click here to find out more.
2. You’ll see a 4x4 grid (16 words). Your goal is to sort out words into four groups of four where each group shares a hidden theme. Themes can be colors, animals, batman, pips etc.
3. Tap or drag to select four words you think form a group, then confirm. Correct groups are locked and reveal a color. Incorrect guesses cost you attempts so you should avoid random picks. Colors in this game also show difficulty
4. You should repeat this process until all four categories are found or you run out of guesses. You should start with obvious clusters or themes and look for multiword hints.
You can play NYT Connections for free on the NYT Games websites or on the NNYT Games app on iOS/Android. Click here to find out more on how to access the game on website and mobile. Even though the daily puzzles remains accessible without payment, NYT has expanded including paid features such as archive for past puzzles and special editions (e.g. Sports Edition) that may require a Games or All-Access subscriptions. NYT has also been active in protecting its IP and asking third party archives to remove replica content so the fastest and safest ways to access past puzzles and premium features is through NYT’s official platforms.
If Connections won’t load, try to refresh the page or clearing your Browser or app cache. Also make sure the NYT Games app is updated to the latest version. If your progress isn’t saving,, sign it with your New York Times account because guest mode reset streaks sometimes. Finally, to access older puzzles, you may need an active NYT Games or All-Access Subscription. You can also use the apps “Help” option to contact support incase you can’t find a solution to the problem you face.
You can improve faster by playing NYT Connections daily. Once you get used to the game, it will feel better when playing. If you’re a NYT Connection subscriber, you can practice using the puzzles archive which builds familiarity with NYT’s logic. You can also screenshot your board and post on social media, Discord or X(Twitter) to get tips from other people.
NYT Connections is a simple puzzle game to learn but its so satisfying which is the reason millions play it every day. You can try it out and become a daily player if you enjoy it. You can also subscribe to its Games or All-Access tiers to plays the games archive.
