A common question some Mobile Legends fans ask themselves is which Country created Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The game was developed by Moonton, a game studio based in Shanghai China and since its 2016 launch, the title has exploded across Southeast Asia and beyond. Unfortunately, the games rise has set off lots of high profile legal fights and major corporate shifts such as Riot/Tencent Dispute, ByteDance Acquisition and much more. This article is going to reveal which Country actually created Mobile Legends: Bang Bang with emphasis on key events that affected its IP ownership and that has shaped the games story.
Released in 2016, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang was created by Moonton, a Chinese developer headquartered in Shanghai. The game’s popularity grew rapidly in Southeast Asia because of how good it was but there’s been a lot of legal and corporate battles relating to its ownership which is intuiting. These corporate battles have also helped define its global path on the World Stage.
Moonton was founded in 2014 in Shanghai and the company moved quickly into mobile game development. The Organization first launched a tower defense game in 2015 called Magic Rush: Heroes and later on Launched Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in 2016 positioning it as a 5v5 mobile MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). The title instantly became popular in Southeast Asia because of its amazing gameplay controls and rigorous local marketing. The games popularity particularly peaked in Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia. Moonton expanded rapidly by opening offices across Southeast Asia and Latin America to support esports, localization and partnerships that helped the game grow from a regional hit into a global mobile esport game.
Mobile Legends success also drew legal scrutiny. In 2017, Riot Games (who is the developer of League of Legends) sued Moonton alleging IP infringement. The case produced several years of litigation and public claims before the parties reached an agreement and Riot officially withdrew its claims in 2024. Tencent (Riot’s Parent Company) also engaged in commercial disputes with Moonton that led to a 2019 complaint and later defamation claims. In 2022, a Shanghai court ruling was found in Moonton’s favor and ordered Tencent to pay (…….Euro)28000 for damages for commercial Defamation.
All these high profile lawsuits and countersuits led to a lot of talk online fueling headlines. The perception was that powerful Chinese tech and gaming organizations were battling over the young MOBA. Lots of reporters used this opportunity to frame the origin Story of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang as one that “China Fought Over”. Another reason reporters believed China Fought over the game was because reported settlements and court rulings show that the matter (case) was complex and resolved through a mix of legal outcomes and private agreements.
In March 2021, ByteDance’s gaming branch (Nuverse) acquired Moonton for roughly $4 billion and integrating MLBB (Mobile Legends: Bang Bang) into ByteDance’s gaming portfolio. The acquisition was beneficial because it boosted Moonton’s resources for esports, regional events, and global expansion. For some time now (2023 to 2025), there’s information going across the Internet suggesting that ByteDance plans on selling Moonton (or divesting the Studio). Reports in late 2025 suggests renewed talks with bidders such as Savvy Games Group which is backed by Saudi’s PIF. I made mention of Corporate shifts in this section because ownership affects investments, esports tournaments, regional publishing strategies, and how the game is positioned in global markets.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang isn’t just a regional hit but it’s one of Southeast Asia’s biggest mobile esports titles. According to Mobile App Trackers and regional esports reports, the game regularly attracts tens of millions tens of millions of monthly players. MLBB M-Series World Championships draws massive viewership with M4 and M5 hitting record numbers across Indonesia and the Philippines. I want to also add that the legal controversies involving Riot and Tencent shaped the global perception of the game in a good way because it influenced partnerships and media coverage. Despite these disputes MLBB evolved into a cultural staple in Southeast Asia as it’s used in national esports leagues.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang was created by Moonton in China but its rise was shaped by global disputes, billion dollar acquisitions, and explosive esports growth. Today, it stands as one of the world’s most influential mobile titles. Fans can also follow MLBB esport scene or M-Series events to learn more about the game.
