Hytale is a sandbox RPG game that features World exploration and building mechanics. Players explore a fantasy world in this game known as “Orbis” which includes diverse biomes, unique landscapes where resources can be collected, and creatures you can fight. Hytale became one of the most anticipated indie titles of the last decade because of its creative freedom, amazing visuals and community told but the game’s development has been very uncertain. The game was originally developed by Hypixel Studios but it’s been acquired by Riot Games, cancelled, and also reclaimed by its original founder, hence the reason people believe the game’s development has been unusual when looking at its potential. This article is going to explain what Hytale is and who controls the game project now.


What Kind of Game is Hytale


Hytale is a Sandbox RPG that combines the creative freedom of block based building with adventure and roleplaying mechanics. The game’s world known as “Orbis”, is procedurally generated which just means each playthrough will offer something unique be it terrains, biomes, dungeons and creatures. Players will be able to build almost anything from shelters to fortresses, and the game will also feature a variety of tools for custom content creation, scripting, and animation that goes beyond sandbox titles.

Hytale will also support multiple playstyles be it exploration, building, combat, and creative expression making it a unique experience for players. This game will also feature multiplayer cooperation so you and your friends can explore Orbis and build something together. I also want to point out that it will support community-run servers and mods which offers players a platform for creating and sharing custom game modes and assets.


Hytale Development History (Why It Was Cancelled)


Hytale’s development journey is very unusual considering the game’s potential as it spans over a decade. Work on the game began in 2015 at Hypixel Studios, which is a team formed by developers behind the popular Hypixel Minecraft serve. There was so much excitement because this team has a long history in community driven content. Riot Games later acquired Hypixel Studios in 2020, with the aim to expand its portfolio with Hytale and accelerate development.

The project encountered delays as time passed by because of technical challenges. Riot Games decided to cancel the development of Hytale in June 2025, citing mismatches between long term goals and the games progress. Shortly after this announcement, Hypixel’s original co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme negotiated to reacquiring Hytale from Riot Games in November 2025. This brought the project back under independent control, leading to the rehiring of key developers. This revival led to Hytale’s early Access Launch on January 13, 2026 leading to a new chapter in the development after so many years of uncertainty.


Who Owns Hytale Now


Based on historical development of the game, Hytale was originally created and own by Hypixel studio which is an indie team founded by developers behind the popular Hypixel Minecraft Server. Riot Games acquired Hypixel Studios, funding Hytale development and in control of the IP. Riot Games canceled Hytale development in June 2025. The original founders led by Hypixel co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme negotiated to reacquire Hytale in November 2025. Since then, the game has returned to the full independent ownership of Hypixel team, who funds its development. Riot games no longer holds any rights or control over Hytale making Hypixel founders the owners of the game IP today. This clarifies the ongoing confusion about the games ownership and highlights the important of its indie roots.



Hytale Release and Current Status


After this game’s unusual historical development, Hytale officially entered Early Access on January 13, 2026 and lots of fans are happy about it. Players interested in joining the Early Access launch can purchase and download the game via its official launcher from the Hytale Website. Pre-order for Early Access opened on December 13, 2025, and then the game went live a month later. Early access basically means the game isn’t finished so the game devs decided to let the community play what’s available while the developers keep building features


Why Fans Are Excited About Hytale


Fans are excited about Hytale because it offers a rare combination of sandbox creativity and the essence of an RPG game. Hytale features procedurally generated worlds, and diverse biomes giving both builders and adventurers engaging gameplay. It has scripting support and community servers which allow players to create custom experiences. This just means the games community is almost guaranteed to grow over time.
