Boruto Shippuden Couldn’t Happen Because of Naruto Lore

The title “Boruto Shippuden” has become really popular among many anime fans online. This is especially true for people who haven’t watched Naruto or people who aren’t Naruto fans. This is because many viewers assumed that Boruto would follow the same structure as its predecessor (where Naruto transitioned into Naruto Shippuden after a time skip). Boruto also features a time skip so fans and other followers of anime expected the sequel to adopt “Shippuden”. Boruto took a very different turn so the time skip wasn’t titled “Boruto Shippuden”, but it was titled “Boruto: Two Blue Vortex”. Boruto: Two Blue Vortex represents the second part of Boruto story after the time skip so it’s like Boruto Shippuden. The reason for this change has to do with Naruto’s lore, the meaning of the word “Shippuden”, and the differences in theme between Naruto and Boruto. This is basically what this article is going to cover.

What Shippuden Actually Means in Japanese and Symbolism

The Word Shippuden translates to “Hurricane Chronicles” or “Legend of the Whirlwind” because it combines Shippu which means strong wind (or gale) and den which means legend or chronicle. This title was created for the anime adaptation of Naruto but the symbolism fits Naruto’s character very well to the point it feels planned. It’s also a thematic representation of Naruto’s chakra nature and justu. Naruto’s primary Chakra nature is Wind Release (or Futon) and his signature jutsu is the Rasengan which is a powerful swirling technique that looks like a spinning ball of Chakra. Although Naruto was an orphan, he became an influential force in the ninja World. This is seen throughout the entire series when Naruto tries to break the cycle of hatred between nations and characters. There are just so many examples to even start listing. Naruto went from nothing to the greatest Shinobi in the World while supporting his friends. You can even say the idea of a “Whirlwind legend” represents Naruto’s role in reshaping the world (Metaphorically speaking).

Shippuden as a title became closely associated with Naruto’s identity and journey so repeating the same name for Boruto would’ve been a bad decision because it won’t carry the same meaning. Boruto’s story is supposed to be the opposite of Naruto so giving the “Shippuden” title would be really bad marketing because it would be a direct attack on hardcore Naruto fans. There are Naruto fans who hate Boruto because it’s already different. Boruto was designed to be unique (in its own way).

Naruto’s Story Was Already Completed

Another reason “Boruto Shippuden” was unlikely is because Naruto’s story had already reached full conclusion by the end of Naruto Shippuden. The Fourth Great Ninja War concluded a lot storylines including those of fillers and Naruto also earned the recognition from the entire ninja world. This is because he helped bring peace between rival nations and he also carried the entire war on his back (with some assistance). At the start of the show, the five great nations competed with each other a lot and even some small nations were involved but by the end, these nations decided to support and assist each other. Naruto also fulfilled his longtime dream of becoming the Hokage of the Hidden Leaf.

Boruto is the start of a different era where the Shinobi World is peaceful. There will be minor conflicts here and there but it’s no outright war and espionage between the five great nations. Even though there’s peace in the Shinobi World, Boruto introduces new threats from the Otsutsuki clan with members including Momoshiki, Kinshiki, Urashiki etc. The story also highlights on the power of Karma which is like a way for Otsutsuki’s to reincarnate. In short, Boruto story is different from Naruto’s so naming it “Boruto Shippuden” won’t make any sense.

Why the Series Became “Two Blue Vortex” Instead

The Boruto manga introduced the title Boruto: Two Blue Vortex instead of Boruto Shippuden as a way to signal a brand new narrative with its own symbolism tied to the Uzumaki clan and the some main characters in the series(Boruto and Kawaki). Uzumaki refers to as “Spiral or Vortex” and this represents the Uzumaki Chakra heritage and the Rasengan (Naruto’s iconic justsu that’s a swirling and spinning sphere of Chakra). The “two” in the title most likely represents the narrative surrounding Boruto and Kawaki, whose destinies are intertwined.

In short, the “Boruto Two Blue Vortex” title symbolizes the rivalry and bond between Boruto and Kawaki, the Uzumaki legacy, and the spiral concept seen throughout Naruto. Shippuden emphasized on Naruto’s personal rise while supporting others and bringing people together meanwhile Two Blue Vortex emphasizes on two interwoven destinies(Boruto and Kawaki) that keeps spiraling towards growth and conflict.

Naruto and Boruto Follow Different Themes

Naruto and Boruto follow completely different theme so a Boruto Shippuden won’t mean anything. Naruto is the person who didn’t have anything but later on gained everything meanwhile Boruto had everything and slowly lost it all. Naruto began as an outcast yearning for acknowledgement(which he got) while Boruto is already respected but struggles because of the expectations placed on him.

I also want to add that Naruto’s story was focused on breaking the cycle of hatred in the Shinobi World, gaining recognition (respect) from society, and overcoming isolation to become Hokage. Boruto story on the other hand emphasizes on the burden of legacy as the Hokage’s son, innovations in science via the Scientific Ninja tools, and threats from Otsutsuki and Divine Tree.

The Time Skip Still Exists without “Shippuden”

Lots of Naruto fans aren’t aware of this but the term Shippuden was an anime choice. There’s no Naruto Shippuden in the manga so it was just an anime branding choice. I am pointing this out because lots of people associate Shippuden with Time skip and that shouldn’t be the case. Boruto has its time skip and its Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. It’s the same as Naruto’s time skip but its different. Boruto Shippuden is not a thing.

Closure

The idea of “Boruto Shippuden” was just fan expectation and it was never a real possibility because of Naruto’s lore. The “Shippuden” title was deeply tied to Naruto’s personality, wind release symbolism and transformative journey. Boruto follows a completely different path because it explores scientific ninja tools (tech), Otsutsuki, Karma and much more.
