Artemis II is NASA’s first crewed mission to the Moon in over 50 years so there’s a lot of excitement in the tech/space scene. This mission is going to be very different from Apollo landings because it’s going to carry astronauts on a journey around the Moon without landing on its surface. One common question many people have is how long the trip will take and this question is asked because of excitement. It might just be a journey to some people but the timeline for the mission has been planned our carefully and it also includes multiple phases. Artemis II mission is expected to last about 10 days from launch so this article is going to give more detail on its different phases alongside landing.
Artemis ii is expected to take around 4 to 5 days to reach the moon. After its launch, the Spacecraft will enter the Earth’s Orbit where its systems are checked and prepared for space travel. This suggests that Artemis ii will head toward the Moon after the Orbit and trans-lunar injection. The spacecraft is expected to perform a trans-lunar injection within its first couple of days in space. The trans-lunar injection is something that the spacecraft does that pushes it or send it toward the Moon. From there, it’s going to travel through space for several days before reaching the Moon's vicinity and prepares for its closest apprack around day 4 or 5. Everything about this mission was planned based on steps and its approach is slower because the priority is on fuel and mission safety. This makes perfect sense because NASA wouldn’t want any Crew dying in space.
Artemis II will not land when it reaches the Moon. The Spacecraft will perform a simple Lunar Flyby, passing thousands of miles above the Moon’s surface with the closest planned approach estimated to be 6,000 miles (10,000 km). This approach is expected to take place in around day 6 of the mission. The spacecraft is going to follow a free return trajectory which means its going to loop around the Moon and use its gravity (the Moons gravity) to redirect back to Earth. This path was carefully designed by NASA as a safety measure so in case there’s a system failure, the Spacecraft would still find its way to Earth. The goal of this Flyby is for the astronauts to test navigation, communication, and systems in deep space that will help prepare for future NASA missions (especially with regard to Moon landings)
Artemis II will return to Earth immediately after completing its Lunar Flyby. NASA expects the return trip to take another 4 to 5 days which brings the total mission duration of about 10 days. The spacecraft is going to use the free-return trajectory to come back which entails using the Moons gravity to guide it safely toward Earth. One of the most intense moments of the mission is going to happen during reentry when the Orion Spacecraft enters Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of around 25,000 mph ( or 40,000 km/h). The mission is also going to conclude with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean where the NASA recovery team will retrieve the crew and spacecraft safely.
- Day 1 is the launch of the spacecraft and entry into Earth’s Orbit
- Day 2 is Trans-lunar injection or departure toward the Moon
- Day 3 to 4 is Deeps Space travel, system checks by the crew and departure toward the Moon
- Day 4 to 5 is the Lunar Flyby (closest approach being 6,000 miles or 10,000 km)
- Day 6 to 9 is the return journey toward Earth
- Day 10 is the Reentry to Earth, Splashdown and Recovery
The goal of this mission is for NASA to test out the Spacecraft’s systems outside of Earth’s orbit. This mission is also expected to cover around 800,000 miles (around 1.3 million kilometers) for a full round trip.

The Artemis II mission was designed by NASA to be safe and its top priority is simply testing out system that will be used in the future, hence the reason it takes 10 days instead of it being a faster trip. The crew needs enough time to test out all the systems in the spacecraft including navigation, communication, and life support in deep space. The spacecraft won’t also take a direct path because the mission was designed to “preserve” fuel which means it’s safe to some extent. The Artemis II mission was not about how fast it can get to the moon but it was for tests to be done for future space missions.
Artemis II is usually compared to Apollo 8 which was the first mission that sent astronauts around the Moon without landing. Artemis 2 will also perform a lunar Flyby and return to Earth so it’s similar Apollo 8. The mission objectives are also similar. The only difference is that Artemis II uses the modern Orion spacecraft which is more advanced and it’s also capable of traveling further away from Earth when compared to Apollo. NASA plans on testing new tech with this Artemis II mission.
Artemis II is expected to take about 4 to 5 days to reach the Moon and around 10 days in total to complete its journey. Even though it won’t land on the Moon surface, NASA will get enough data that will be valuable for future space travels. The objective of the mission is to test new technologies so everything was perfectly planned.
