NCIS Never Really Planned Ziva’s Return

NCIS is one of the most successful dramas on television and even though it has a lot of amazing characters, not many characters left an impression as strong as Ziva David. Played by Cote de Pablo, Ziva was introduced in NCIs Season 3 and she quickly became a fan favorite character before an exit in Season 11. Surprisingly, Ziva has returned to the series and there’s been a lot of discussion online about whether the show had secretly foreshadowed her comeback. There are lots of articles online that suggest earlier episodes hinted at a planned return but when you look at things from a realistic perspective, it might just be fans looking at it that way. This article is going to reveal what happened behind the scenes and why the foreshadowing theory is most likely misleading.


Why Fans Believe NCIS Foreshadowed Ziva’s Return


The main argument that NCIS foreshadowed Ziva’s return is based on emotional continuity across the series. This just means after her exit is Season 11, the show continued to reference her through conversations between Gibbs, Tony, and other team members. There was also an unresolved relationship between Tony and Ziva and this kept her presence alive in the narrative since their storyline didn’t receive an official closure on-screen. Naturally, in long running procedurals like NCIS it’s very common for departed characters part of the dialogue for continuity. Fans usually think of this kind of thing as hidden storyline intent and other people even think mentions of Ziva is later Seasons were clues but that’s not the case.


What Actually Happened Behind Ziva’s Exit and Return


From a realistic point of view, Ziva’s return wasn’t a long term hidden plan. NCIS Season 11 emphasized on the departure of Cote de Pablo and the character (Ziva) was written out of the way which suggested a permanent exit. In Season 11 Ziva story was written as someone who left NCIS and returned to Israel and this was because of Cote De Pablo’s exit, not a story. In Season 13, it was revealed that Ziva died because her farmhouse in Israel was destroyed by an attack connected to the Rogue CIA agent Trent Kort so everyone thought Ziva died. This means Ziva was written off because the actress who played her character left the show but the writers avoided completely closing the door on her character permanently.

After some time (years), there was later developments which revealed that Ziva had survived and was living in Secrecy which allowed writers to reintroduce her much later in Seasons 16 and 17. This means Ziva’s return was not confirmed or planned from early or prior Seasons but it was developed years after her exit making it part of a new creative direction. NCIS is a procedural drama so and in many cases, storylines can be created or destroyed based on actor availability, audience demand and shifting writing priorities. Ziva’s return fits this pattern perfectly so it was unlikely a pre-planned foreshadowing from earlier episodes. Also, there's no official confirmation from the writers that Ziva's return was planned years earlier.


The Foreshadowing Theory Doesn’t Hold Up

The idea that NCIS intentionally foreshadowed Ziva’s return earlier becomes weaker when you look into how most procedural shows are written. Episodes of NCIS are produced Season by Season meaning the writers focus on immediate story arcs rather than planning return for characters who have already exited. Even though there were emotional references to Ziva after she exited the show, you should remember that there were lots of similar references to many former characters who didn’t return and this suggest that dialogue continuity isn’t the same as future planning. Some characters who died and were referenced throughout the show include Caitlin Todd, Mike Franks, and Jenny Shepard. In fact an example similar to Ziva is Abby Sciuto who left the show in Season 15 but was still being mentioned. Most dramas usually mentioned characters who have exited or died to maintain some sort of emotional consistency. Characters who exit are supposed to be talked about especially if they were major characters. The issue here is just interpretation. Fans like to over think about past scenes when a character who was thought to be dead is alive, thinking it was some sort of plan.


Why Ziva’s Return Actually Happened


The real reason behind Ziva’s return to NCIS is tied to audience demand and the franchise’s strategy when you look at it from a realistic point of view. Ziva was one of the most popular characters in the show, including years after Cote de Pablo left the series. There was also the storyline between Ziva and Tony that gave her character traction even after she exited from the show. Bringing her back was a pretty good idea because it generated so much buzz on the internet. This isn’t something unique to this show because lots of other shows on screen and revived beloved characters to boost ratings and interest. Ziva’s case was different because it didn’t only boost the show’s popularity (revive interest) but now NCIS can finish everything that was tied to her character.


How Fans Misread the Storytelling in NCIS


One reason fans believed NCIS planned Ziva’s return is because people started looking at references after she came back. It’s what some viewers will call the “recton effect” and this is when viewers reinterpret old moments through the lens of a brand new story development. Fans now see references to Ziva now as clues. This thought process is honestly very common amongst a lot of people and it’s not bad. It’s just our minds searching for something we think is right.


Closure


Even though there are lots of popular fan theories, NCIS most likely didn’t plan Ziva David’s return years in advance. The decision was most likely made after she exited in the show. There were lots of references in the past but this isn’t proof of long term planning on its own. Overall, only the creators of the show knows the real truth about what was happening behind the scenes.
