Naruto Wont Die in Boruto

The question of whether Naruto does in Boruto has been debated among fans for years (since the start of the Boruto anime). Most of this speculation comes from the flash-forward scene shown at the beginning of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, where the hidden leaf had been destroyed. In this flash-forward scene, we also see Boruto saying he won’t forgive Kawaki and Kawaki saying he will send Boruto “where he sent the Seventh Hokage”. This short flash-forward scene led to so many discussions and many people assumed Naruto was dead. Boruto also used his Jogan in the scene and that’s when all rumors about his eyes started to pop-up with some fans even saying he is related to Toneri. Despite all the discussions online, the story hasn’t confirmed Naruto’s death. In fact, as the Boruto anime progresses, the narrative regarding Naruto’s faith is different from what fans feared.


The Flash-Forward Scene That Started the Theory


Most of the speculation surrounding Naruto’s fate comes from the opening flash-forward scene in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. In this scene, we see Boruto confronting Kawaki in a destroyed version of Konoha which suggested that a major battle took place in the village. During this interaction, Kawaki says he will send Boruto to the same place where he sent the Seventh Hokage. Many viewers didn’t know who Kawaki was at the time and they assumed Naruto had been killed, after all it was Boruto story so Naruto lost the plot armor he had in Original Naruto series and Naruto Shippuden.

Lots of Naruto fans were furious because it was disrespectful, following Naruto’s journey for a long time just for some random person (Kawaki) to disrespect him. Kawaki’s dialogue didn’t mention that Naruto was dead but that was the assumption because anime fans are usually quick to judge. The wording was deliberately amphioxus leaving room for different interpretations. As the story has progressed, lots of fans have come to realize that the line may have been referring to something else other than death meaning the scene was put at the start to create suspense.


Kawaki’s Motivation is Built around Protecting Naruto


After a long time, Kawaki was finally introduced in the Boruto anime. You can watch episodes 187-189 of the Boruto anime to see. A very important factor of Naruto’s death lies in the motivations of Kawaki. Throughout Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Kawaki develops a strong emotional bond with Naruto Uzumaki who was the first person to genuinely treat him with compassion after years of abuse from his father and under Kara organization. You can also watch Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 192 titled “Past” if you want to know more about Kawaki’s past with his dad before Kara. It wants included in the manga so manga-only readers might not know about Kawaki’s father.

Naruto gave Kawaki a home in the Hidden Leaf and also treats him like a member of his family so Kawaki’s motivation was to protect Naruto. The story repeatedly emphasized on how Kawaki was willing to go extreme lengths to ensure Naruto’s safety even if it means sacrificing himself or others. We know this because Kawaki was willing to give himself to Code just so Naruto could be safe. This can also seen during the Isshiki fight when Kawaki followed Isshiki’s wishes so Naruto would be safe. Another scenario was when Kawaki tried to kill Boruto (he killed Boruto but Momoshiki brought Boruto back) because Momoshiki was a threat to Naruto. From a narrative perspective, removing Naruto from the story through death will weaken the emotional foundation of Kawaki’s character which revolves around protecting the Seventh Hokage.


Does Naruto Die in Boruto?


Before starting this section, I just want to inform you that it will contains spoilers for the Boruto manga. No, Naruto does not die in Boruto. In the story leading to Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Kawaki sends Naruto and Hinata into to a different dimension using his space-time justu. This dimension freezes time so Naruto and Hinata do not age or experience the outside world when sealed there. Naruto and Hinata were sealed leading up to the events of Two Blue Vortex and this was before the time skip (Two Blue Vortex). Kawaki sealed them off in order to protect both of them from Momoshiki because Kawaki was afraid Momoshiki would take over Boruto’s body and do something to them. Kawaki then decided to run away but he found Eida and that’s when she cast omnipotence.

Omnipotence is an ability that lets Eida manipulate reality by granting a person’s desires or wishes. This ability was acquired from a very powerful Otsutsuki known as Shibai and she has his cells. It’s a very powerful move that she herself cannot control. Eida’s omnipotence swapped the lives of Boruto and Kawaki. Kawaki became the son of Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyuga meanwhile Boruto became a fugitive who killed Naruto (even though Naruto isn’t dead). No one knows about this except for Sarada, Sumire, Boruto, Kawaki, and Sasuke (because he listened to Sarada).

I still want to point out that the event occurs shortly before the time skip that separates the original Boruto: Naruto Next Generation storyline from its sequel arc. In other words, it’s the arc after the Boruto anime end but before the time skip. The fact Naruto is sealed rather than killed is very important. Kawaki’s solution to protecting Naruto was to remove him from danger entirely rather than allow him to be harmed. Naruto is simply suspended from the story but he’s not dead so he can return.



Boruto Story Focuses on Legacy and Not Replacement


Naruto’s death won’t be necessary because of the central themes of Boruto. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex places strong emphasis on legacy and the relationship between generations of Shinobi. Boruto won’t replace Naruto but he will understand the responsibilities that come with Naruto’s legacy. The story is also in contrast with Naruto as it emphasizes on Scientific Ninja tools to deal with modern threats. Keeping Naruto alive is a wise choice because it’s like a symbolic bridge between the old generation and the new one so it reinforces Boruto’s journey without completely erasing Naruto’s story.


The Time Skip in Boruto Two Blue Vortex Changes the Conflict


Boruto: Two Blue Vortex takes place after the effects of Eida’s Omnipotence. Everyone knows Kawaki is Naruto’s real son meanwhile Boruto is the outcast Naruto brought home. Boruto is wanted and he flees the village. During the time skip, there’s a new problem and it’s the humanoid ten tails. Boruto is still wanted and Omnipotence is still in effect so Boruto is seen as a wanted criminal and Kawaki as the true son of Naruto Uzumaki. Boruto, kawaka, Shikamaru, Eida, Sarada and some others have to work together to defeat Jura (Jigen), Hidari (Sasuke), Matsuri (Moegi), Mamushi (Bug) and Ryu (Shinki), who are humanoid ten tails of the original people. They are extremely strong so Boruto and Kawaki temporarily put aside their differences to handle the problem. The story is focusing on the new generation because Naruto and Sasuke are no longer involved so characters like Himawari, Sarada, Inojin and many others are involved in the story.


Closure


The question of whether Naruto Uzumaki dies in Boruto has become widely discussed among fans. When you examine the events of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and Boruto: Two Blue Vortex carefully, the story basically suggests a different outcome for Naruto. It’s the time skip already and Naruto isn’t dead. Kawaki strong desire to protect Naruto and his decision to seal him means death was never planned for Naruto. Naruto and Sasuke are also out of the picture so the new generation can shine without any unnecessary killings.
