Disney just released the Official Trailer for the highly anticipated Moana live action remake and it’s already one of the most talked about films of 2026. Lots of fans were curious to see the cast revealed including the return of Dwayne Johnson as Maui and reactions across the internet have been mixed. There’s been so much debates online since the trailer dropped, accompanied with memes and even outright criticism over the new look and choices in the trailer. Some fans are still thrilled but many others are not happy about the trailer. This article is going to talk about Moana live action cast, and information about the trailer (including all controversies on the internet).


Moana Live Action Cast


Disney has revealed main cast for the upcoming Moana live action remake and they’ve brought familiar and new faces to the beloved story. The leading cast is Catherine Laga’aia who will make her film debut as Moana. Catherine Laga’aia is an Australian actress of Samoan heritage. There’s been so much talk about her as she’s going to take the spotlight of a beloved character.
Dwayne Johnson Live Action Cast
Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as the demigod “Maui” from the original film. Dwayne Johnson voiced Maui in the Moana animation released 2016 and its sequel released in 2024. Supporting roles in this live action remake include John Tui as Chief Tui (Moana’s Father), Frankie Adams as Sina (Moana’s Mother), and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala (Moana’s wise grandmother). This push for new talent alongside top performers emphasizes on Disney desire for cultural representation especially within the Polynesian communities.


The Biggest Controversy Right Now (Maui’s Look)


The major controversy about Moana Live action trailer was centered on Dwayne Johnson’s portrayal of Maui which includes his costume and his overall appearance. In the trailer, we see popular actor and wrestler, Dwayne Johnson in prosthetic bodysuit and a long wig and lots of fans say it looks unnatural or cringe. In all honesty, Dwayne with the hair looks very very funny. The hair is also criticized for looking like a messy and amateur cosplay. Fans are angry about this because they can remember how Moana characters look so it’s like Dwayne is ruining people’s perception of the animated show.

This is basically what the controversy across the internet is about. There are other reasons but Dwayne Johnson’s design as Maui is what “slaps”. Maui’s design in the live action has generated a lot of buzz on the internet because of how funny and cringe it looks. Even hardcore Moana fans are worried about the movie’s directions but it might look better on the big screens.


Why Does This Movie Even Exist


Another controversy isn’t about the cast (Dwayne Johnson as Muai) but about the timing of the remake. Lots of fans took to Social media questioning why Disney would remake a beloved film like Moan so soon. The original Moana animation debuted only in 2016 and its sequel released in 2024. Moana isn’t The little Mermaid, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella. This has led to so many people dismiss the live action version as unnecessary. There’s a trend of Disney remaking classics as live action remakes and people thought Disney might create something new and fresh but that’s unlikely. Comments across different social media platforms confirm that there’s a “Disney Remake Fatigue”, where viewers feel like the industry is just recycling familiar films for profit. It’s simply a way for Disney to make money but people want something new. This sentiment also feeds into broader debates about Hollywood’s current direction with Moana cited as one of the latest examples of a pattern that exists.



CGI and Visual Concerns


Another issue people have about the Mioana Live action revolves around its visuals, especially the heavy use of CGI. The live action hasn’t released yet but the trailer was enough to show people what to expect. The complaints (especially on YouTube) was centered on how the live action does not feel real. The scenes are described as looking overly processed or like animation in disguise because the digital environment and effects on screen dominated the visual rather than looking like something real. There were even jokes online about how the teaser looked like 90% CGI but it just depends on perspective. The environment in the teaser was also criticized for its usage of AI.


Catherine Laga’aia Casting Decision


Honestly, the casting of Catherine Laga’aia has garnered a lot of discussions. The discussions surrounding this topic isn’t bad but it’s not also good either. Many viewers appreciate the choice of Catherine Laga’aia as Moana because of her cultural background but there are some criticism about the changes from the original. In animated Moana is voiced by Auli’I Cravalho and fans strongly resonate Moan’s character with her. If Dwayne Johnson voiced and played Maui, then why didn’t Auli’I Cravalho play Moana. Anyways, Catherine Laga’aia is a very good choice for the role.


Is the Moana Backlash Justified?


Just because there are negative comments across social media that doesn’t mean Moana will fail or it’s doomed for failure. Dwayne Johnson as Maui with the wig might be funny, the live action might be a mix of CGI and AI environment but it will still make money because it’s Disney and Moana is a popular IP. Lilo & Stitch made so much money at the box office despite some criticisms so Moana might be a success. The backlash is justified because it’s based on perception but that doesn’t mean it won’t do well.

The official trailer of Moana has led to so much discussion online. From Dwayne Johnsons wig, to Catherine Laga’aia casting, to the CGI, to Disney remakes etc. People might have a ‘Live action remake fatigue” but that doesn’t mean Disney will stop anytime soon. This is because Disney wants money and some Live Action remakes have successfully done that. The controversy online also benefits Disney because it’s like a way of promotion.
