KPop Demon Hunters became a breakout Netflix animated hit because of its mix of music-centered storytelling and its amazing fantasy Worldbuilding. It was a successful Netflix show so fans started calling for a sequel and it might actually be possible. This is a very common pattern in Netflix. You see, when a Netflix Film performs well, it’s usually treated like the start of an entire franchise. It might just be the entire Entertainment industry as a whole because it’s not just Netflix although this article will emphasize on Netflix. But not every successful film benefits from a sequel. This article is going to explain why Netflix maybe misunderstanding what made KPop Demon Hunters work.
The main strength of Kpop Demon Hunters is that it’s a fresh or new show that’s good. It’s not some remake or live action. It introduces its world, it builds its characters relationship (Rumi, Mira, Zoey, Jinu, Saja Boys) and resolved its central conflict in just one narrative. The film had a very clear story and its end left viewers, it had amazing music, amazing characters, and it was really relatable and this is the reason it was successful. Although some fans might want a sequel, the film had a very good closure. It was just a new show that’s good.
When a Netflix show or film gets good viewership, Netflix usually responds by expanding standalone stories of it into franchises. An example of this is Enola Holmes. Enola Holmes was so successful that Netflix decided to produce a sequel. Another example of this is “Extraction”, where its good engagement and viewership led to the creation of a bigger universe. The reason for this is because Netflix treats a films popularity as proof of franchise potential. Netflix sees and values money before good content. This strategy can increase content volume and the platforms subscriber count but it shifts the focus from storytelling to business scalability.

Forcing sequels on stories that were not designed for it can weaken the impact of the original. An example of this is “Bright”. It had good viewership but after several attempts to expand it into a larger franchise universe, it lost its appeal, faced a lot of criticism and also stalled development. This is because the original content didn’t have a good long term narrative. When stories are extended for unnecessary reasons, they usually suffer from a reduced emotional impact, weaker character arcs and there’s just this lack of originality (like there’s something missing). An example is Wednesday. Season 1 was huge especially because of the viral Tiktok Wednesday Dance (Bloody Mary) but Season 2 wasn’t as good as Season 1. It’s the same case with Squid Game. The Walking Dead was the most talked about show on the Internet till Season 7 and lots of fans stopped caring.
KPop Demon Hunter works because its story feels complete. There are some people who want a sequel but extending it might just ruin the shows name. If Kpop Demon Hunter were to have a sequel, there’s a 60% chance it won’t have as much emotional impact or originality of the first part of the film. However, there are exceptions to this.
One problem with Netflix is that is usually equates success with expansions but this doesn’t mean a better outcome. No matter how much money you spend on a sequel for a show, if it isn’t good then it won’t be liked by viewers. It’s honestly that simple. People watch shows because of how good it is and because of hype. A show expanding doesn’t guarantee the same level of audience connection. There are cases where people respond positively to focus stories than franchises that dilute the beauty of the original show.
The success of KPop Demon Hunters should not be a sign of franchise expansion but it highlight the value of good original storytelling. I am not saying Netflix shouldn’t have franchises but Netflix should be able to distinguish between stories that are naturally expandable from stories that are completed as they are. An example is “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” which is a film that was widely praised even though it didn’t have a sequel.
The success of Kpop Demon Hunters is proof that original and complete stories can do very well. Netflix has successfully expanded films such as Enola Holmes and Extraction but shows like Bird Box is proof that expansion into franchise doesn’t always enhance impact. A key lesson here is that success shouldn’t automatically mean sequels. People want new relatable stories.
