How Crossplay Works in Valorant

Crossplay is the ability for players on different gaming platforms such as PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, to play together in the same multiplayer matches. Valorant expanded beyond its original PC-only release to support new gen consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S which raised the question about Crossplay between platforms. Even though console players can now play Valorant together across PS5 and Xbox, the game does not currently allows PC players to match with console players. This article is going to explain exactly how Crossplay works in Valorant, outline the platforms supported, why PC and console ecosystems are kept separate , and what Riot Games’ approach means for players seeking true Cross platform play.


How Crossplay Works in Valorant


Crossplay in Valorant is partial meaning players using PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S can play together on consoles, but PC players are kept in a separate ecosystem and cannot play with console users. This is because Valorant currently groups matchmaking pools by platform type rather than combining all platforms into one shared pool. Console Crossplay works because both PlayStation and Xbox versions use similar control systems (controller inputs) and Riot has enabled matchmaking between those platforms

On the other hand, Riot has intentionally chosen not to merge PC and console and console matchmaking. Crossplay between PC and consoles is technically feasible but Riot has emphasized on how maintaining competitive integrity is a top priority, and the difference between keyboard/mouse and controller inputs could create an imbalance if those platforms were mixed in one match. This is very relevant in this context because a shooting game like Valorant requires fast responses and precision. Valorants game queues remain separated because of this. In a nutshell, Riot supports console crossplay but not full cross platform play across devices.


Valorant Platforms and Current Support


Valorant originally launched as a PC-only shooter game in June 2020. Riot Games later expanded the title to support next generation consoles. Valorant is now available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in many regions including North America, Europe, Japan, and Brazil, through Riot Games console rollout program. These console versions reflect the original PC experience in terms of content, agent, maps, and game modes. The only main difference is the Control schemes and different matchmaking pool.

Unfortunately, Valorant is not currently supported on legacy consoles such as the PS4 and Xbox One. Riots focus was on next-gen hardware capable of an amazing performance that’s consistent with the game. Even though the core game content is similar across platforms, Riot keeps the PC ecosystem separate from console ecosystem in terms of crossplay and matchmaking. This is to ensure a balanced competitive experience for each platform.


Why Valorant’s Crossplay is Limited


As mentioned above, Valorant’s limited Crossplay is a deliberate choice by Riot Games and it’s designed to preserve the competitive fairness in the game. This is because aim precision and input speed matter a lot in Valorant. Crossplay in shooting games usually leads to balance issue where players using a keyboard or Mouse on PC can aim and react faster than players using a controller on consoles even when aim assist is available. Valorant is a highly competitive tactical shooting game so Riot decided to separate PC and Console matchmaking to maintain level playing fields for each input type. In an official Interview, Riot confirmed that Valorant will keep PC and console players in separate queues to ensure matches remain fair and feel right for each platform. However, Crossplay is supported between Consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X/S) because both groups use similar controller inputs.



Cross Progression Across Platforms


Valorant supports cross progression across all platforms as long as players use the sane Riot Games account. This means your unlocked weapons, skins, agents, battle pass progress, missions(daily and weekly), and account will carry over whether you’re playing on PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X/S. Riots support confirms that account content and progression are shared across platforms even though ranked progression and matchmaking remain separate. This just means players get to enjoy the benefits of their investment as it can be used across different platforms. Cross progression works well as long as your Riot account is properly linked.


What this Means For Players


Valorants Crossplay limitation means that PC players will always queue with other PC players, and console players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S can play together with each other. Friends using different platforms cannot share the same match so PC players cannot join a party with console players directly. Valorant supports Cross Progression meaning players who log into their Riot account on any platform will retain their skins, unlocked agents, Battle Pass progress, and other elements in the game. This system ensures that you can use your earned content even though matchmaking pools remain separate.

Valorants crossplay is limited by design. Console players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S can play together but PC and console players remain in separate matchmaking pools due to competitive balance and input differences (keyboard/controller). Cross Progression on the other hand is fully supported and it ensures that your progress, unlocks, and cosmetics carry across platforms when using the same Riot account.
