Lots of Window users try to uninstall Valorant only to realize that the process fails, freezes or leaves part of the game behind. Valorant is different from most PC games in that it’s tied to Riot Vanguard (Riots anti-cheat system) which operates at a very low level of the operating system. This unique setup leads to error messages such as “Riot Client is still running” or “Unable to install”. This is the root of the Valorant uninstall problem hence the reason uninstalling the game might feel confusing to some people. This article is going to reveal why Valorant doesn’t uninstall like other programs and reveal how to fully remove both the game and its anti-cheat from Windows.
The main reason Valorant is difficult to uninstall is because of its reliance on Riot Vangaurd. Riot Vanguard is kernel level anti-cheat that loads automatically when Windows starts. Vanguard installs itself as a system service and a driver so it continues running in the background unless it’s manually stopped. Windows may prevent Valorant files from being removed when Vanguard is active which is the reason the uninstall process fails or appears stuck. Riot client also runs silently in the background even after the game is closed and this also adds to the Valorant uninstall program. Windows doesn’t also allow programs to delete files that are currently in use so any active Riot process can interrupt uninstallation process. In some rare cases, permission restrictions, corrupted installation data and conflict with security software can prevent Valorant from uninstalling normally.
Uninstalling Valorant should be a straight forward process under normal circumstances. This involves closing Riot Client and also making sure that Vanguard has been removed from the system so no Riot services are active. Once all background processes have been stopped, Valorant can be easily removed through Window settings (going to the installed apps section in setting and clicking uninstall). It’s also good to restart the PC so all temporary services and cached data is removed. Unfortunately, Vanguard doesn’t always automatically uninstall with Valorant hence the reason the Valorant doesn’t uninstall. This is also the reason many Valorant players get error messages when trying to uninstall Valorant.
Valorant refuses to Uninstall because of background activity. The most common issue is the Riot Client running in the background even when it looks closed. In short it runs in secret so people aren’t aware it still functioning. As long as those processors are active then Windows will block the Valorant file from being deleted. Another cause of the error message is because of Vanguard behavior when starting Valorant. Vanguard launches at boot and it operates in a system level so it can interfere with removal unless its service is stopped first. Something else that can halt the uninstallation process of Valorant incorrect administrative permission sin your PC and corrupted files during the installation process. All these issues mentioned above can cause an error message when uninstalling Valorant.
1. Close All Riot Processes: Press Ctrl + shift + Esc to open task manager and close all processes related to Riot such as Riot Client, Valorant and Vanguard. This is very important because Windows can’t delete files that are currently in use.
2. Disable Vanguard from the System Tray (If it’s visible): If you see the Vanguard icon on the system tray (taskbar icon close to the clock at the bottom right corner), right click on it and chose Exit Vanguard. This should be done if and only if you see it on the system Tray
3. Uninstall Riot Vanguard First: Go to Settings -> Apps -> Installed Apps and locate Riot Vanguard then click Uninstall. Riot Vanguard runs at as part of the system so removing it first prevents it from blocking Valorant
4. Uninstall Valorant: In the same installed apps menu, find Valorant and click uninstall. Valorant should uninstall normally once Vanguard is removed.
5. Remove Vanguard Services Manually (If uninstall fails): If the above steps don’t work, you can remove Vanguard services manually. To do this, open Command prompt as Administrator and run these commands to remove Vanguards kernel services;
sc delete vgc
sc delete vgk
6. Delete Leftover Folders: You can also manually delete leftover folders from;
C : \Riot Games \
C : \Program Files \Riot Vanguard\
%localappdata%, %appdata%, and %prrogramdata% (Folders related to Riot).
7. Restart Your PC: You should restart your PC to make sure all services and files related to Valorant have been cleared from your device
If there’s still uninstall issues, restart windows in Safe Mode before repeating the removal process because this can help stop stubborn background services that normal boot mode can keep active.
It’s good you Uninstall Valorant without any issues in case you plan on reinstalling it later on. After you remove Vanguard, delete leftover files and restart your PC, it’s good that you clear temporary files using Windows Disk cleanup or Storage Sense. This will remove cached data that may interfere with a new installation process. You should also reinstall Valorant using the official Riot Games launcher because Vanguard is required and it will be reinstalled automatically. I also want to add that your account data which includes your progression, skins etc. is stored on Riots server so uninstalling Valorant won’t affect your progress in the game.
Valorant integration with Riot Vanguard make uninstalling it complex when compared to other PC games. When the normal uninstall fails, you should stop background services, remove Vanguard and delete leftover files to ensure complete removal. Nevertheless, Valorant is a really good game so many won’t want to uninstall it.
