Familiars in Maplestory are companion cards that provide powerful passive bonuses and combat effects when they are summoned. Familiars can rank-up in Maplestory which is a very interesting progression system in the game. An improvement in a familiars rank means players can improve a familiar’s tier which leads to an increase in the familiars stats. However, ranking up familiars is not a straightforward process in the game. This is because it requires both farming duplicates and leveling them in combat before an upgrade attempt is even possible. This article is going to explain how to rank up and farm familiars in Maplestory, what you need to prepare, and how the systems works.


What Are Familiars in Maplestory


Familiar in Maplestory are collectible monster cards that can be obtained when you defeat mobs in different regions of the game. There are lots of familiars in Maplestory and when you collect them, they can be summoned to give you stat bonuses such as an increase item drop rate, increase boss damage, increase defensive buffs and much more. Each Familiar in this game has a rank. These ranks include Common, Rare, Epic, Unique, and Legendary. A higher rank will give you stronger potential effects and a better overall performance. These ranks matter because it helps both low-level players and high level players. A low level player might use a Rare Familiar for basic drop rate bonuses meanwhile a high level player can use an Epic or Unique Familiar to gain boss advantage.


Requirements to Rank up Familiars in Maplestory


Two conditions must be met before a familiar can be ranked up in Maplestory. The first condition is that the Familiar must reach Level 5 and secondly, it must have enough fusion progress (rank-up charge). When it comes to Leveling your Familiar, you need to summon it and defeat monsters. As the Familiar fights beside you, that’s how it’s going to gain experience before it eventually reaches Level 5 which is the maximum level required before you can rank.

The second requirement for Ranking Up familiar is a Fusion Progress and this is acquired by combining duplicate copies of the same familiar. Each duplicate will increase the rank-up gauge in the game and once it’s full, the Familiar becomes eligible for an attempt to rank up. Let’s take an example. If you are trying to rank up a “Rare Stone Golem” you must first summon it and fight with it until it reaches Level 5. You would also need to obtain additional Stone Golem Familiar cards and fuse them to fill the rank up gauge (or bar). The rank up option will only become available when you complete both of these requirements.


How to Rank Up Familiars in Maplestory


Once both requirements are met to rank up your familiar, open your Familiar UI through the Familiar tab in your equipment or character menu. You choose a familiar that has reached level 5 and has a fully charged rank-up gauge (or bar). Maplestory will unlock the Rank up option if these condition are met. All you need to do is Click the Rank Up button to attempt an upgrade. Rank-up isn’t always guaranteed and failures can occur from time-to-time so if the rank up is successful, the familiar will move to a higher tier for instance from Rare -> Epic -> Unique. It’s good to have several sets of duplicate Familiars because of failed attempts especially when going rom Epic Familiar to Unique Familiar.


Best Ways to Farm Familiars in Maplestory


The best way to Farm Familiars in Maplestory is to combine familiar farming with constant grinding in the game. Familiars drop from monsters in most regions so the best strategy is to train in high density maps where mobs spawn quickly. Train in maps like Morass, Esfera, or others related to Arcane River. You should also equip a Familiar when you are playing. Location matters a lot because a player who is constantly grinding in Esfera for EXP or mesos will collect lots of Familiar drops over time. These players will also accumulate duplicates while progressing their character and existing Familiar.


What Happens When You Rank Up a Familiar?


When a Familiar successfully ranks up in Maplestory, its tier increases and its potential also becomes stronger. The familiar will move to a higher rank i.e. from Common -> Rare -> Epic -> Unique -> Legendary. Its potential lines are also rerolled and it will gain access to stronger stat outcomes. Ranking in Maplestory resets or changes its existing potential which means you may lose useful effects during the rank up process and need to re-roll or re-appraise the Familiar. This just means if you are ranking up from Rare to Epic, you will lose a very useful Rare Familiar bonus because you are now Epic.

Ranking up Familiars in Maplestory is a process. Players must level up their Familiars to Level, collect duplicates for fusion and then attempt rank-up through the game’s Familiar system. Even after you meet all the requirements, you can still fail the rank up process so it’s good to have multiple Familiars so you can try several time. Keep grinding in the locations mentioned and you will be able to rank up your Familiars.
